Wear Behavior of Hard Coatings against TC4 Ti-Alloy:An Experimental Study

Abstract
The Ti33Al67N,Ti50Al50N and Cr30Al70lN hard-coatings were deposited by c-ARC+ cathode arc ion platting on substrate of YG8 cemented carbide. The influence of the sliding-load and Al-content on the tribological behavior against TC4 Ti-alloy and interfacial adhesion was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and conventional mechanical tools to understand the wear mechanism(s).The preliminary results show that a combination of smearing, adhesive and oxidation wear-mechanisms produced localized peeling-off of the coatings from the substrate and that the Al-content mattered. To be specific,at a lower load,Ti33Al67N coating had the best wear-resistance; but at a higher load(~20 N),Cr30Al70lN coating exhibited the best wear-resistance.The localized film peeling-off was also tentatively discussed.
